The strategy defined in Lisbon (March, 2000), the challenge of Bologna for Higher Education, the specific objectives for educative and training systems, the recommendations about social cohesion, integration and European citizenship that facilitate access to lifelong Education, have been narrowed several lines of analysis which reinforce the dialogue achieved in Europe by Society & Education.


Through the Project Management Department in charge of the detection of new projects and programmes, the support of the presence in networks and the contribution with technical and administrative solutions for the development of its activities, Society and Education promotes the educative cooperation in the European scene.

AIMS

Reports, publications, articles and monographic documents related with the European convergence process in higher education on recommendations and guidelines in educational matters of the European Union: Bologna Process, Concrete future objectives of education systems and Lifelong Learning.

Collaboration with national and public bodies in the diffusion of the European construction process in the strategic promoted by governments.

Establishment of alliances with foundations, associations, organisms and entities at European level.

Give continuity to the process purposed to obtain the status of Active Body of the European Union to Society and Education.

Carry out the Strategic Plan for the Education European Network (E.E.N.) of Society and Education.
The Education European Network is organized and coordinated by the Institute of Educative and Social Studies (Research Department of the European Foundation Society and Education). It pursues the strengthening of European cooperation in education experience exchange, and the sharing of good practices.

It operates in four fields:

INSTITUTIONAL FIELD. To connect Entities and Organizations interested in promoting the Education in democratic societies, through cooperation in broadcasting the Society & Education aims in the Member States.
THEMATIC FIELD. To propose teachers and investigators participate in research lines of the Institute of Educative and Social Studies, which are structured around concrete issues for sharing ideas, proposals, projects, works and methodologies. Currently, there is a specific net which is articulated around the study of the Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights, designated as, Education and Citizenship.
RESEARCH FIELD. Connect professors and experts in the research fields of the Institute of Educational and Social Studies.
FIELD OF PROJECTS. To offer the associated organizations (members of research teams, universities, educative centres, associations …) the opportunity to take part in the coordinated projects by Society & Education to apply for financed programs of the European Commission.

EUROPEAN SPOTLIGHTS

On the occasion of 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the Educational and Social Studies Institute decided to create the European Center for Cultural Cooperation, a platform of research, meeting and dialogue on the relationship between different cultures in a globalised world from a humanist concept of society and history. The Center includes a group of interdisciplinary experts made up of lecturers and professors from various fields.

At the heart of the Center´s proposals lies to inspire models of social and political organisation based on people´s dignity, respect for human rights
as a universal goal, the search for peaceful coexistence among peoples and nations and the inspiration to spread individual and collective freedom under conditions of equality.

The Platform for Intercultural Europe is a civil society initiative developed as a response to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue in 2008. Its vision is of an equitable European community that values its diverse people, seeks positive dialogue with others and enables each person to make their distinctive contribution to a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
The Platform is a democratic association whose membership is open to any organisation or individuals that support its vision and constitution. Society and Education is member of the Platform from june 2009.

The European Foundation Centre (EFC) promotes and supports networking and collaboration among foundations and corporate donors and build alliances with philantropy support organisations in Europe and beyond. Society and Education is member of its Diversity, Migration and Integration Interest Group (DMIIG) which gathers foundations to promote best practice by fostering networking, exchanging and collecting information on promising practices, enhancing knowledge and building intelligence on the sector and communicating and coordinating foundations interested.

The Education Law Association (ELA) is a nonprofit association offering unbiased information about current legal issues affecting education and the rights of those involved in education in both public and private schools, universities and colleges. Its members represent three distinct contingency groups: Attorneys, Professors and School Administrators.
ELA is the premier forum for professionals interested in practical knowledge, scolarship and interdisciplinary dialogue about legal and policy issues affecting education. Its Founder-President Professor Jan de Groof has been recently appointed UNESCO´s chargé de mission for the right to education.

The Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning based on indicators and benchmarks (CRELL) was established in order to gather expertise in the field of indicator-based evaluation and monitoring of education and training systems. CRELL combines fields of economics, econometrics, education, social sciences and statistics in an interdisciplinary approach to research.

CRELL became operational in August 2005 and is sponsored by the European Commission's Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) and co-ordinated by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (DG JRC).

La UE alcanza uno de sus objetivos en materia educativa, pero no podrá cumplir los demás plazos.
Casi una década después de que los países miembros acordaran cinco objetivos clave en materia de educación y formación, un informe Englishrevela que no los alcanzarán en el plazo previsto (2010).
Sólo se ha conseguido aumentar en 15% el número de graduados en matemáticas, ciencias y tecnología... y de graduadas, objetivo ligado al anterior.
Los países miembros han avanzado en tres campos (participación en el aprendizaje permanente, reducción del abandono escolar en educación secundaria y superior, aumento del número de jóvenes que finalizan el segundo ciclo de enseñanza secundaria), pero en conjunto siguen sin cumplirse las metas propuestas.
En el quinto objetivo la situación no sólo no mejora, sino que empeora: la capacidad de lectura de los jóvenes de 15 años es hoy menor que en el 2000.
En general han aumentado los niveles de educación en Europa. Si bien un 30% de la población en edad laboral (77 millones de personas) tiene un bajo nivel educativo, su número ha disminuido en casi un millón al año desde el 2000.
La UE reconoció hace tiempo que mejorar la educación era fundamental para superar los obstáculos económicos y sociales, pero la Comisión cree que la recesión pone de manifiesto la urgencia de reformas e inversión en este campo.
Según otro informe Englishsobre cooperación educativa entre los países miembros, la inversión por estudiante ha aumentado en todos los niveles educativos desde el año 2000. Sin embargo, el gasto en educación superior no crece con la misma rapidez. Los países miembros tendrán que incrementarlo de media en 10.000 euros por estudiante al año si quieren ponerse al nivel de Estados Unidos.
Todas estas metas forman parte de la Estrategia de Lisboa, plan para el crecimiento y el empleo que los líderes europeos adoptaron en el 2000 por un periodo de 10 años y sobre cuyo estado de aplicación la Comisión publica informes anuales.
Ahora el plazo está a punto de cumplirse y la UE se replantea sus objetivos. A principios de 2009 los gobiernos introdujeron nuevos objetivos en materia de educación durante los primeros años de la infancia y educación postsecundaria y acordaron hacer extensivos a las matemáticas y las ciencias los objetivos de lectura para los estudiantes de 15 años.
