Socio-Educational Research

This area of investigation responds to one of the foundational objectives of the Foundation: to interpret the reality of education while considering its effects on personal development, social integration and civic values.

Additionally the current configuration of democratic European societies to understand education as a basic tool for progress and to become more competitive.

Projects of Reference
  • Civil society, religiosity, and education: to analyze religious experience, to study how populations perceive religiosity in the public sphere and its potential to contribute to civic education (2020-2022).
  • Mapping of early school abandonment in Spain, paying special attention to the whole child development of youths: detailed characteristics of children at risk of withdrawing from school; influential factors in school withdrawal rates; economic and social consequences of school withdrawal, and programs and interventions for its prevention (2020). 
  • Changing educational systems through a Whole Child Development Leadership Programme in Portugal and Spain: experimental leadership program developing whole child education for children from vulnerable backgrounds, integrated into 15 Spanish and Portuguese public schools (2019-2022).
  • Whole Child Development: mapping of Spanish initiatives supporting whole child development, including cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and talent development (2017-2020).
  • Project managed by the Foundation Marcelino Botin: “The social prestige of the teaching profession: perception and reality.”
  • Civischool, creating the civic-focused education, a program of work that aims to enforce the civic values and virtues through development of social competencies to better social harmony and the school environment.
  • The European youth: a look at education, scheduled activity for the “Educating Europe” festival, organized by the Spanish Presidency of the European Union in collaboration with the Minister of Education.
  • Intercultural dialogue in Spain: a requirement for education and a culture of peace. Report.
  • New tests to cohabitate in the classroom. Meeting about School Harmony and Preventing Conflicts. In collaboration with the Castille-Leon regional government.

 

Objectives

The aim of Civischool is to construct a civic school which will aim to enforce civic values and virtues by developing social competencies which further harmony and better the school environment.
The contributions from different areas of analysis are the result of a critical reflection about the current problems facing education and their effects.

Among its objectives are the creation of networks, the writing of reports, the design of training programs, convocations of experts and publications of authors and collectives.

  • Project commissioned by the Marcelino Botín Foundation: “El prestigio social de la profesión docente: percepción y realidad” (“The Social Prestige of the Teaching Profession: Perceptions and Reality). Summary here.
  • The Foundation collaborated with the Bertelsmann Foundation during the 5th Congress Dialogue and Action. Main themes included managing cultural diversity in the face of critical reflection, exemplary initiatives, and constructive propositions.
